Hipócrates fue el primero en determinar la duración de la gestación en 280 días, 40 semanas o 10 meses lunares. Posteriormente Carus y después Naegele, en 1978, confirmaron estos datos.
Si el cálculo lo realizamos desde la fecha de la concepción (el día en el que quedaste embarazada), el embarazo duraría 38 semanas. Pero existe una gran variabilidad en cuanto a su duración debido a determinados factores de una mujer a otra, aunque lo más habitual es que el parto se desencadene en cualquier momento desde la semana 38 a la 42.
Hoy en día, y de forma consensuada, para determinar la fecha probable de parto al primer día de la última regla se le suman 40 semanas, y en el caso de que se desconozca la fecha de la última regla, las semanas de gestación se pueden determinar en base a otros datos como son la altura uterina o la percepción de los primeros movimientos fetales que aparecen en los primeros embarazos alrededor de las 20 semanas y en los demás sobre las 18 semanas, aunque hoy en día se utiliza la ecografía que permite ajustar la edad gestacional con mayor certeza.
